The best music moments of 2016
It is well and truly that time of year where we reflect on the eventful moments of the last 12 months, saying that, this probably isn’t the first ‘Best Bits of 2016’ blog you’ve come across this week and it surely won’t be the last so let’s get into it..
So for me personally I found it hard to think of one monumental thing that stood out in 2016 which seemed like a disappointing result and secondly made for a really boring blog, but then I realised the one thing that was dominant was music. There was so many fun music orientated things that happened this year – to the point where I really started to care! I stayed up to date with current album/EP releases , kept an eye out for show dates, stayed in the loop of who’s performing where (which can all be found on myjulies.co.uk ;)) – it was like a full time job.
Rewinding back to January, Future performed at The O2 Academy, Brixton and this was probably the best show of the year. I’ve never seen anything more electric, the crowd were on form, the venue was perfect, Future was perfect.
On a more intimate level South London rapper, Cadet held his first headline show. Family, friends and fans attended the March show which was full of special guests such as Donaeo then performing with Big Tobz, Krept and Konan and Ms Banks in consequential shows. He is probably the best example of the saying a lot can change in a year.
I do not make a habit of writing about things I didn’t personally attend BUT I will make an exception for Culture Clash. I convinced myself it was for the best I didn’t go because I would have probably passed out with excitement. There wasn’t a second whilst watching it that I wasn’t excited! They didn’t only win me over with clashes and battles, they killed me with all the special guests – any readers from the Channel U era understands why. What an epic show!
A2 promised us a headline show and delivered two! He’s spoiling us I know.
The Pickle Factory homed the first show in June it was warm, it was personal, it was genuine – no song was not sang by the crowd. The second show showed progression, everything down to the lighting was better he also brought out Etta Bond and performed my favourite song ‘Never Did’ so that helps.
In the midst of it all there is one event that never fails to let me down, Garage Nation! This weekender is the ethos of summer if you’re a newbie to festivals or simply prefer a good summers day vibe then this is where you need to be next year, for the love of garage do the right thing!
On a slightly different note – no pun intended – Miraa May finally dropped her EP ‘N.15’ If you want to get all technical, as far as art and creating goes, this is one of the best compilations of work. You know when you listen to a song and you can really feel every minute that went it to it. I love that and I appreciate you Miraa May.
I could definitely go on all day about this but I can’t fit a year into a page and I struggle to keep things brief so it’s a wrap kids.
Some of my favourite music moments of 2016.
