I can only class this man as a musical genius – someone that just gets it! He understands the layers in sounds, the different elements that work together and creates absolute magic! From his amazing vocals to his capturing visuals, he has gone beyond just being one to watch, but one to be scared of.
Steven Umoh better known as Obongjayar is a 25 year old, Nigerian born musician paving his way in the UK music scene. Many may not have heard his name until recently as he has been hiding away his talents and only started sharing his music last year.
His track ‘Creeping’ is what really drew me into Obongjayar as an artist. The song was so different from the current UK sound, yet so powerful. His sound has a mix of jazz & soul, with clear influences from spoken word and afrobeats from artists like Fela Kuti & Asa. His sound creates is a mixture of bliss.
“On Creepin, I’m talking about people who are don’t allow the construct of time dictate what they’re trying to do. They will go all night, through to the next day, to get better at what they’re doing” (Interview w/I-D Mag)

From there, he released his first EP – ‘HOME’ in November 2016 on Soundcloud which brought in a wide variety of fans and artists that led to more exposue ans collaborations. One being with XL founder Richard Russell on his ‘Everything is Recorded’ EP featuring the likes of artists such as Sampha & Giggs.
But the release of his most recent EP – ‘BASSEY’ is what really set the bar for me. His sounds take you on a spiritual journey from the different vocal ranges to his meaningful lyrics & drum patterns. This 4 track EP is absolutely amazing! The EP features the previously released single ‘Endless’ with its video directed by Matlida Finn; a video that fits perfectly with the sound of the track.
However, my favourite track on this EP is ‘Spaceman’ – this song talks about going through the trials and tribulations that society set, which in the end, doesn’t even matter. This song speaks to me on so many levels, despite sounding corny as f***, but when you listen to this track please take time for it. You know just before bed when you have that one moment of quiet time…. yeah, listen to it then.
I am extremely excited to follow Obongjayar on his musical journey and all the gems he is soon going to release. Watch out for this guy, he is going to be big!
